Sono molto orgoglioso di creare questa pagina molto importante per tutti noi di Sentiero Rosso. Vi racconto in breve la storia: qualche mese fa siamo stati contattati da Bryce In The Woods a nome del Consiglio Tribale di Cheyenne River tramite la lettera che vedete sotto, con l’invito ad andare da loro per visionare uno stabile in disuso da adibire a centro per l’infanzia, in Dupree, a poche miglia da Eagle Butte.
La lettera è stata indirizzata a noi perchè alcune persone (in primis Floriano Massera “Privatejoker”) hanno lavorato su questo progetto, e dopo aver fatto le verifiche del caso, ci hanno scelti (dopo aver contattato le nostre conoscenze a Rosebud e Pine Ridge) come associazione affidabile per collaborare insieme alla realizzazione di questo centro.
Col gruppo di Agosto ci siamo recati in visita, e l’accoglienza è stata molto bella. Siamo subito stati portati al Consiglio Tribale e ci hanno fatto subito parlare per presentarci, e poi il giorno dopo abbiamo addirittura parlato nella ricorrenza del 10°anniversario del ritorno della Sacra Camicia della Ghost Dance, in occasione della commemorazione delle vittime del massacro di Wounded Knee (Si Tanka e la sua tribù erano Minneconjou).
Il centro servirà per aiutare i bambini ed i ragazzi ad avere un posto dove ritrovarsi per studiare, giocare, crescere insieme in armonia, coltivando le loro antiche tradizioni, facendoli stare lontani dalla play station e dalla lingua americana, cercando di reintrodurre in loro la cultura della Sacra Pipa e della lingua lakota.
L’accoglienza che Bryce In The Woods, Candace Lee, Donna Talks e il Chairman, Joe Brings Plenty e gli elders della riserva ci hanno riservato è stata stupenda. Abbiamo visto le signore anziane piangere perchè hanno capito che non tutti i bianchi vanno li per distruggere o per prendere, ed abbiamo passato momenti fantastici, sfociati con la partecipazione alla sundance di Arvol Looking Horse, 19° portatore della Sacra Pipa originale, quella che Donna del Bisonte Bianco donò al popolo lakota.
Siamo stati ospitati anche nel grande centro per l’infanzia di Eagle Butte della mia amica Julie Garreau, bellissima struttura, trovate le foto nel resoconto del viaggio di agosto 2009.
Ogni anno andremo in visita a Cheyenne River per stare coi nostri amici e per monitorare il centro che stiamo per creare, daremo la possibilità a chi di voi vorrà stare un periodo nella riserva di andare a fare volontariato direttamente in questo centro, così vi renderete utili e magari potrete affinare la vostra lingua inglese.
Il centro sta messo maluccio ora, questa pagina sarà costantemente aggiornata coi progressi della sistemazione, diciamo che per ora bisogna cominciare quasi da zero.
Sistemare subito il tetto e il pavimento esterno per impedire all’acqua di entrare è la priorità attuale e dobbiamo sbrigarci, l’inverno è alle porte.
LE DONAZIONI
Ogni donazione in denaro che farete a Sentiero Rosso dovrà recare come causale “donazione per il centro di Cheyenne River”, noi raccoglieremo un tot e poi gireremo tutto alla riserva, integralmente senza trattenere nulla. Faremo una lista dei donatori che potrà essere visionata durante i meeting, e quando il centro verrà inaugurato faremo una targa da appendere all’entrata del centro, a nome di Sentiero Rosso, coi nomi ed i cognomi di tutti i donatori. L’abbiamo viste in ogni centro per l’infanzia che abbiamo visitato in questi 10 anni di viaggi nelle riserve degli indiani d’America.
E’ possibile donare anche materiale tipo coperte, vestiario, materiale didattico ecc., quando il centro sarà operativo il nostro compito sarà quello di provvedere al materiale che verrà utilizzato al suo interno (computer, banchi, sedie ecc).
Speriamo per Natale di fare un bel regalo a questa gente e soprattutto ai loro bambini, per fare questo c’è bisogno di tutti voi e della vostra generosità. A dicembre se Hopan avrà qualche giorno libero al lavoro si partirà per andare a Cheyenne River e per partecipare alla cavalcata commemorativa di Wounded Knee.
DIAMOCI DA FARE, abbiamo la possibilità, come italiani, di fare una grande cosa nella riserva.

This is an important page for all of us at Sentiero Rosso, and I am proud to tell you how we came to be involved helping the Cheyenne River Tribe to build a youth center in the town of Dupree, South Dakota.
A few months ago, we were contacted by Bryce In The Woods on behalf of the Cheyenne River Tribal Council. (His letter to us appears below.) Mr. In The Woods invited us to Dupree, (a small town near Eagle Butte) to visit an abandoned building and determine whether we could assist with renovations to create a new Youth Center.
The Youth Center’s purpose would be to provide a place where children and young people can study, play, and grow together in harmony, cultivating their ancient traditions. There would be activities such as sports or dances, and classes in several subjects including the Lakota language.
However, the center’s underlying mission would be to foster and perpetuate the Lakota tribal culture. Young people would be encouraged to immerse themselves in the culture of the Lakota Sacred Pipe, and would have a chance to practice and speak the Lakota language. (By becoming actively involved in understanding their own heritage, and sharing it with their friends, they will spend less time watching television and playing sedentary computer games.)
In August, our 12-member Sentiero Rosso team arrived in Eagle Butte to a warm welcome by Mr. In The Woods. He introduced us to Tribe Chairman Joe Brings Plenty, and we met with members of the Cheyenne River Tribal Council.
The welcome we received from Bryce In The Woods, his wife, Candace Lee, Chairman Joe Brings Plenty and the elders, and a tribe member, Donna Talks, was wonderful.
We had a fantastic time, which culminated with our [my] participation in a sundance featuring Arvol Looking Horse, 19th original bearer of the Sacred Pipe, that Donna White Bison gave the Lakota people. (SEE QUESTIONS BELOW)
Also, during our visit, we helped celebrate the 10th anniversaryof the return of the Holy Ghost Dance Shirt, in commemoration of the victims of the massacre at Wounded Knee (Si Tanka and his tribe were Minneconjou). This was a colorful and vibrant event, in which costumed dancers evoked the spirit of their ancestors as they mourned those who were lost at Wounded Knee.
We saw old ladies cry because as they realized that not all white visitors are there to destroy or “take away.”
My friend, Julie Garreau, the director of the Cheyenne River Youth Project, graciously allowed our S.R. members to bed down for the night at large children’s center in Eagle Butte. This is a beautiful building, and you see pictures of it in among the ones we posted about our August 2009 expedition.
From this point forward, every year we will go on a visit to Cheyenne River to stay with our friends and to check the progress of the new Youth Center that we are renovating.
Also, if some of you want to live on the reservation for a short time, Julie Garreau will give you an opportunity! If you become a volunteer at the youth program in Eagle Butte, you can help staff members organize youth activities and do some simple administrative work while also getting a chance to practice speaking English.
However, the Youth Center that we plan to provide is almost 20 miles away from Eagle Butte in the city of Dupree. And the Dupree building that will be used for this center needs so much work right now that we almost have to start from scratch.
Our contacts at the Rosebud and Pine Ridge reservations, whom we have helped with projects in the past, tell us that our new friends in Cheyenne River are reliable and that the project is solid, so they will be happy to join us working together to establish this new Youth Center.
On urgent need right now at the Dupree Youth Center site, is to immediately repair the roof and fix the floor outside the building. This is urgently needed to prevent water from entering the facility. And we must do it in hurry because winter is upon us.
